Positive Affirmations That Don’t Suck

Self-talk can be incredibly powerful. Every moment of everyday we’re using that little voice inside to either build ourselves up or tear ourselves down. Kind of crazy when you stop to think about it, right?

The way you speak to yourself matters, friends. What you project, you manifest into reality. You may have heard of this with the recent trend of creating vision boards, but the bigger idea is known as The Law of Attraction. If you aren’t familiar, here’s a basic rundown: our thoughts become things. If we are focusing on negativity, doom and gloom, and “woe is me”, we will attract similar energy. I don’t know about you, but I’m at a point in my life where I’m trying to steer clear of the Debbie downers and surround myself with those who will lift me higher.

What makes this whole happiness thing tricky is that being happy can be hard. It is SO MUCH EASIER to focus on the bad and to settle for the sorrow. Happiness takes work and conscious effort. One avenue to attract those good vibrations and positive energy is through positive affirmations. Truth be told, I used to think these were total bullshit. I envisioned standing in front of a mirror, repeating things like “You are the most incredible person in the universe and everyone loves you” and feeling like a humongous liar.

I realized that the trick to making all of this positive self-talk work is authenticity. It was true: standing in front of the mirror and repeating someone else’s mantras WOULDN’T work for me, because I didn’t believe them. To make this work for you, you need to find (or invent) the mantras and affirmations that actually resonate with your soul.

making affirmations work:

Adopt an “I will…” attitude vs. a “Will I…?” attitude

Speak to yourself with conviction and confidence

Test, Edit, and Test again: if it doesn’t feel right, don’t force it. Should you feel totally comfortable with your affirmation? Probably not; this is about growth and change. At the same time, if it feels like complete bullshit, don’t toss is out, just edit and keep moving forward.

Use phrases like “I can…”, “I am willing to…”, and “I deserve…” to help you get started

five affirmations that don’t suck:

I was made for this.

This is my day. I can do this.

I radiate love and light into the world.

I choose to be happy.

I will replace anger and frustration with love and understanding.

Come up with your own affirmations (or if they resonate with you, steal mine!). Write them down. Post them where you’ll see them. Read them aloud.

You just might change your life.
